PARKINSON'S DEMENTIA
BY
IVAN HINCE
Dementia of any kind is a terrible thing, and
Parkinson's dementia is no different.
Once
the central nervous system start to shut down or to act
very slowly it can be a slippery slope to hell for those
concerned.
Parkinson's disease or Parkinson's dementia is very
similar to Alzheimer's disease, and which ever name you
call it there is no known cure.
In
normal circumstances Parkinson's dementia happens to
people over the age of 60 years, but recently there have
been cases of people being much younger.
For the
patient it must be frustrating as their brain still
works but its though everything is in slow motion as the
muscles in the arms and the legs don't move as fast as
their brain would like.
Walking
can be a problem and patients tend to walk with small
steps almost as though their shuffling. Their
hands can shake, and as the patient gets older certain
things like going to the toilet can be out of control.
With
all dementia the person caring for the patient can have
a hard time. I can remember my own step mother
having ordinary old age dementia at the age of 99 years.
She didn't know who I was but she could sing its a long
way to Tipperary word by word.
On the
bright side of things I've been reading about the work
done by Medical research in the United States headed by
Robert O Young and his team.
They
have had some fantastic results in giving some sufferers
hope by drastically changing their diet and by doing so
the quality of the patients life has improved to the
point many can lead a normal life.
Hopefully this work will continue and many more patients
can be helped.
Perhaps
I should say that the type of diet Dr Young and his
colleague have been implementing is one of an alkaline
nature which is basically fresh fruit and vegetables
with most of the diet being on the vegetable side.
This
means that things like meat, sugar and sugar based
products like chocolate, cakes and biscuits have been
ruled out.
As well
as helping patients with Parkinson's dementia and
Parkinson's disease it has also helped people with
Alzheimer's and Cancer and many other diseases.
