HEART
BYPASS
BY
IVAN HINCE
If the
average person knew how many heart bypass operations
were done each year they would be shocked. When I
saw the figures I didn't realise what an unhealthy lot
we were.
In
America it is estimated that at least 500,000 operations
are carried out each year so when you take in the rest
of the world you have to admit that's a lot of
operations.
For
someone to be considered for this operation they have to
fall into certain categories which means that the
arteries that lead up to the heart become blocked by
either a plaque type substance like that of cholesterol
or even sometimes it can be a small blood clot.
As you
get to a certain age your Doctor will be looking out for
signs that your heart rate is not as good as it could
be. By monitoring your blood pressure and by using
a cardio electrograph machine he can tell if you are
having troubles.
From
here you will be sent to see a specialist who in most
cases will put you a treadmill type of machine to see
how your heart responds to stress, and depending on the
results he will either recommend you for surgery or not.
