Ten things you should know to avoid Osteoporosis. back to top

Osteoporosis is a crippling disease, which will make your bones brittle, causing fractures to occur.  Each year thousands of people all over the world are likely to suffer this painful disease. It is estimated that 1 in 3 women and 1 in 12 men over the age of 50 worldwide have osteoporosis. It is responsible for millions of fractures annually, mostly involving the lumbar vertebrae, hip, and wrist.

As you see from the figures that women are likely to get Osteoporosis than men, which is due the hormone change after menopause.

Who’s at risk, and what to avoid.

There are many things you should avoid, and there are many things you can do to avoid problems yourself.

  1. Stop Smoking.  This goes for many complaints, and it has been proved to be one of the factors that can bring on Osteoporosis.
  2. Top up your daily intake of Calcium, which will help in the maintenance of healthy teeth and bones.
  3. Avoid to many fizzy drinks.  Replace them with Calcium based drinks. (Milk etc)
  4. Avoid too much alcohol.
  5. Avoid over exercising.  (Lifting over heavy weights.)  One fact I have learnt is that Marathon runners tend to suffer in later years.
  6. Avoid being to thin.  Try to maintain some body fat, as skinny people do tend to suffer more.
  7. Do some form of light exercise each day.
  8. Make sure you have a daily intake of Vitamin D.
  9. Control your diet.  Make sure you get your daily intake of fresh fruit, and vegetables.
  10. Always consult your Doctor should you think you have a problem, as I’m sure there are a lot of cases that never get mentioned, or get the help that there is to be had.

Footnote.

I should say at this point that Osteoporosis is not a killer, although it can be very painful for anyone that suffers.  Having this disease can slow the bodies defence system down with pain, and that is when other complications set in.  Things like Deep vein thrombosis, and pulmonary embolism are common, hence if you have a fracture of the hip you usually are operated on quickly.

There are no known cures, although the Medical profession can help in many ways, and that is why I always recommend that you consult your Doctor.

Osteoporosis-Things you should know.                       top of page

By Ivan (Mick) Hince.

It's funny how you can go through life not knowing about certain things, and Osteoporosis is one of those things for me.  Yes I'd heard the name before, but until you actually know someone who suffers with this terrible condition it's hard to even guess what some people go through.

Now I'm not a medical person, although I do have an interest in Alternative Medicine. So I decided to check out using my inquisitive mind, and not to sound like a complete ignoramus.  I decided to do some homework, and find out what it entailed.  I knew it was something to do with brittle bones so I set off on a world of discovery.

I found out that Osteoporosis is a disease of the bone, which the mineral density of the bone breaks down, or is drastically reduced.  The collagen part of the bone, or the protein part is altered which means that people with Osteoporosis are more at risk with bone fractures.  It only takes a small amount of stress to the bone, which will then fracture quite easily, as against a normal healthy person who would not be in the same trouble.

Who's at risk?

Older men can suffer with Osteoporosis, but the majority of postmenopausal women are the main ones to suffer. This is due to the lack of certain hormones, or due to certain medication, or even smoking can cause the onset of the disease.  In most cases Osteoporosis occurs in the wrist, the hips, or the spine.

With the spine the vertebra tends to collapse causing severe pain in the back, which also then travels down the legs, and can even cause numbness in the toes.  Generally people tend to hunched up, as the spine no longer supports them as it should.

But when people get Osteoporosis in the hips, and a fracture occurs this is when most problems occur.  In normal circumstances the patient would have to be operated on immediately because of the risk of Deep vein thrombosis, and a pulmonary embolism.

In a lot of cases if someone in your family suffered when they were older, there's a good chance that you might suffer as well.  There are also a lot of things that can contribute to getting Osteoporosis.  I have already mentioned Smoking, and another one is too large an intake of alcohol.  A few others I should mention: First the prolonged intake of the drug Prednisone, or any other glucocortioid.

Someone with a low body fat is at risk, or someone with a low calcium intake, or a low intake of vitamin D.  Another theory is the large intake of soft drinks, which contain phosphoric acid, which in modern times tends to replace drinks with calcium (Milk etc)

Facts, and figures.

People who remain physically active throughout life have a lower risk of osteoporosis. Conversely, people who are bedridden are at a significantly increased risk. Although it has to be mentioned that a lot marathon runners develop Osteoporosis when they are older, which I guess is due to the low amount of body fat.

It is estimated that 1 in 3 women and 1 in 12 men over the age of 50 worldwide have osteoporosis. It is responsible for millions of fractures annually, mostly involving the lumbar vertebrae, hip, and wrist. Fragility fractures of ribs are also common in men. The incidence of hip fractures increases each decade from the sixth through the ninth for both women and men for all populations. The highest incidence is found among those men and women ages 80 or older.

Hip fractures are responsible for the most serious consequences of osteoporosis. In the United States, osteoporosis causes a predisposition to more than 250,000 hip fractures yearly.

Treatments.

There are several treatments that can be given so all is not lost.  Most of these treatments revolve around diet change, and several things like calcium and vitamin D.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Cleansing and Detoxing the body.                 top of page

By Ivan (Mick) Hince

Cleansing and Detoxing seems the in thing to do.  All over the Western world people are booking into clinics to have their insides cleaned out, and to be fed carrot juice for a week at astonishingly high prices.

Also there are many adverts trying to sell you d.i.y home kits where once again you pay high prices, and I'm sure in a lot of cases most people are being ripped off.

Everything seem to start a few years ago when Drug users were encouraged to come off their use of drugs.  Doctors would then use alternative drugs to kick them of their habit.  From that day it seems as thou everyone is jumping on the band wagon although it's fair to say that not all are out to rip you off.

Medically it has been proven that to Cleanse, and Detox you body can be a good thing, and can help with conditions like acne, allergies, colitis, and Crohn's disease.  By using the these methods it does allow the body to almost kick start itself to once more to regain it's proper balance.

Body Cleansing has been utilized for centuries by various world cultures as a form of spiritual purification. Even the ancient Egyptians used cleansing rituals to rid the body of toxic waste believed to cause disease. Traditionally, these cleanses involved periods of fasting, consuming specific foods and herbs and enemas.

It is also believed that In the 19th century, cleansing proponents described the large intestine as a sewage system, claiming that stagnation caused toxins to be absorbed by the body. Laxatives, purges, and enemas were routinely recommended to prevent the accumulation of waste which could lead to this "autointoxication".

In cultures where fasts and cleansing are the norm, there are fewer incidence of obesity and various 'western' diseases. Modern cleansing owes its roots to German-born physician, Max Gerson, who developed a cancer treatment in the 1920s based on bowel cleansing and dietary changes. Dr. Gerson brought his treatment to the United States in 1938, where he practiced until his death in 1959.

Over the years their has been many different forms of Cleansing and Detoxing.  I'm sure you have heard of Colonic irrigation where the intestine, and colon are washed out.  Then their are specialized things like Liver or Kidney Detoxing.  Each has it's specialized treatment.

Diabetes facts and figures.                                 top of page

By Ivan (Mick) Hince.

According the World Health Organization in 2006 there were 171 million sufferers world wide, and that's a figure that estimated to double by the year 2030.  Diabetes Mellitus occurs through out the world, but is more common in the civilized countries.  The greatest increase anywhere at the moment is in Africa, and Asia.

History.

Although diabetes has been recognized since antiquity, and various forms of treatments have been known since the Middle Ages, and it has only been understood experimentally since about 1900.

The discovery of a role for the pancreas in diabetes is generally ascribed to Joseph von Mering and Oskar Minkowski, who in 1889 found that dogs whose pancreas was removed developed all the signs and symptoms of diabetes and died shortly afterwards. In 1910, Sir Edward Albert Sharpey-Shafer suggested that people with diabetes were deficient in a single chemical that was normally produced by the pancreas—he proposed calling this substance insulin, from the Latin insula, meaning island, in reference to the insulin-producing islets of Langerhans in the pancreas.

After that is was Sir Fredrick Grant Banting, and Charles Herbert Best who repeated the work of the two gentleman above in 1921 where they clarified the work on the pancreas, and the existence of insulin.  By doing experiments they could induce diabetes in dogs, and then in turn reverse it by giving them an extract from the pancreatic islets of Langerhans from healthy dogs.

Two years later Banting and Best both received the Noble Prize for their work.  After this Insulin production was stepped up, and it wasn't long before it spread through out the world.

  1. Diabetes screening is recommended for many people at various stages of life, and for those with a certain risk factor. The screening test varies according to circumstances and local policy. Many healthcare providers recommend universal screening for adults at age 40 or 50, and often periodically thereafter. Earlier screening is typically recommended for those with risk factors such as obesity, or a family history of diabetes.
  2. Many medical conditions are associated with diabetes and warrant screening. A partial list includes: high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels, coronary artery disease, past gestational diabetes, etc. The risk of diabetes is higher with chronic use of several medications, including high-dose glucorticoids, some chemotherapy agents (especially L-asparaginase), as well as some of the antipsychotics and mood stabilizers.
  3. Diabetes is often detected when a person suffers a problem frequently caused by diabetes, such as a heart attack, stroke, neuropathy, poor wound healing, or a foot ulcer, or certain eye problems.
  4. According to the American Diabetes Association, approximately 18.3% (8.6 million) of Americans age 60 and older have diabetes. Diabetes mellitus prevalence increases with age, and the numbers of older persons with diabetes are expected to grow as the elderly population increases in number. The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III) demonstrated that, in the population over 65 years old, almost 18% to 20% have diabetes.

Regarding another study more than 40% of Americans 65 yr and older meet diagnostic criteria for type 2 diabetes. Older Americans are also more likely to have complicating conditions such as retinopathy, hypertension, and kidney problems.

The way diabetes is managed changes with age. Insulin production decreases because of the age-related impairment of pancreatic beta cells. Insulin resistance increases due to the loss of lean tissue and the accumulation of fat, particularly intra-abdominal fat, and the decreased tissue sensitivity to insulin. Glucose tolerance progressively declines with age, and there is a high prevalence of type 2 diabetes and postchallenge hyperglycemia in the older population. Age-related glucose intolerance in humans is often accompanied by insulin resistance, but circulating insulin levels are similar to those of younger people.

Researchers and clinicians agree that treatment goals for older patient with diabetes need to be individualized and take into account health status, as well as life expectancy, level of dependence, and willingness to adhere to a treatment regimen.  Following evaluation, one of two levels of care can be recommended: symptom-preventing care or aggressive care. The decision is made jointly by the patient and the primary caregiver.

Skin Cancer Advice.                                               top of page
    By Ivan (Mick) Hince.

There are many forms of Cancer in today's modern society, and most of them are not very pleasant. Skin Cancer seems to be on the increase, and like all Cancer's is worrying for the person involved. Usually Skin Cancer develops in the epidedermis which is the outermost layer of the skin. so that tumors can easily spotted and detected at an early stage. As far as modern medicine can tell, there are three types of Skin Cancer and each is named after the part of the skin that it comes from.

Each year there is more and more publicity advising us to use sun screen when we go out into the sun, and generally it is advised to use a sun factor of at least 30. If you are fair skinned the chances of getting skin cancer from the sun are quite high. Were possible wear long sleeves or a hat, or keep re-applying the sun cream every two hours to form a barrier against the Ultraviolet radiation.

The most dangerous of Skin Cancers is the Malignant Melanoma which has a dark brown or black colour in appearance. Signs that might indicate a malignant melanoma include change in size, shape, colour or elevation of a mole. The appearance of a new mole during adulthood, or new pain, itching, ulceration or bleeding of an existing mole should be checked.

Most skin cancers can be treated by removal of the lesion, making sure that the edges (margins) are free of tumor cells. The excisions provide the best cure for both early and high-risk disease.

For low-risk disease, radiation therapy and cryotherapy (freezing the cancer off) can provide adequate control of the disease; both, however, have lower overall cure rates than surgery.

Moh's Microsurgery is a technique where the cancer is removed with the least amount of surrounding tissue and the edges checked immediately to see if tumor is found. This provides the opportunity to remove the least amount of tissue and provide the best cosmetic surgery, especially when excess skin is limited, in areas such as the face.

Cure rates are equivalent to wide excision. Special training is required in this technique.
In the case of disease that has spread (metastasized) further surgical or chemotherapy may be required.

If you are reading this and have any doubt in your mind about a mark, or a mole on your body don't hesitate to go to the Doctor's and have it checked out. Like the old saying it's better to be safe than sorry especially if it's a Malignant Melanoma which can spread to other parts of the body causing fatal results.

One website I did find that was very interesting on Skin Cancer was written by Daryl Grant PhD from Brisbane Australia.  If you have any worry whatsoever I suggest you check out his site.

Menopause and Weight gain.                                             top of page

     By Ivan (Mick) Hince.

To a certain extent you may find it funny that an article about Menopause is being written by a man. But the side affects of living with a woman who is going through this delicate time of life is immense.  I really truly believe that men should understand what women go through, and I hope that as many men read this article as women.

The mood swings, the hot flushes, the lack of sleep, the weight gain, and general depression etc. Even being a mere man I understand what a difficult time it is for you girls, and I'm sure in some cases it's worse than others.

But if you are suffering with the menopause please don’t worry because you’re not on your own.  Millions of women are going through the same thing, and it may comfort you to know that there is an alternative to HRT, which is reported to be responsible for heart attacks, strokes, and even cancer.

Compiling this article I have come across several references to the Menopause, and one that caught my eye was a website by a Lady called Cathy Taylor.  She went on to say how she did a lot of research and how she can offer help and encouragement to any suffering from all the Menopause symptoms. She also tells of her frustration with the lack of adequate answers to the point she felt scared, discouraged, and unhappy with her life.

The more she researched the more frustrated she became as she quotes that most of the information available was years out of date.  What I would like to say is that women deserve to get the best knowledge, and information because is a difficult time for both men and women.  Today’s world with the Internet is getting easier for all to get that right information.

Another thing I should say before we go any further is that is very important to work with your own Doctor through your problems, and the more you understand what you’re going through, the better you will be able to talk to your Doctor about it.

Natural cure for Multiple Sclerosis.                  top of page

    By Ivan (Mick) Hince.

Over the years Multiple Sclerosis has become an untameable disease, and the people that suffer will testify to that.  They have aching joints, and a low quality of life.  They are always tired, and lack energy normal people have, and their life expectancy is very short.

Ask yourself how you would feel if you couldn’t move properly, and your co-ordination went out of the window leaving you with bladder and bowel problems.  You can imagine the despair they feel, and how hopeless their lives have become.

Recently I read a report on how most of these problems could be cured after scientific experiments.  Imagine the joy someone would feel being able to move about freely, and not having to depend on others to do basic things like walking, or going to the toilet on their own.

This scientific program has helped many, and it gives everyone hope of a new beginning although at this stage it’s not sure whether it can cure it altogether.

As this is a natural cure can you imagine how much the drug companies are going to loose, and it’s so new your Doctor probably wouldn’t have heard about it.  I have read many testimonials from people who call it a miracle cure, and they are looking towards Doctor Robert O Young as a God after his scientific breakthrough.

The basics of his findings is that diets of people in the Western world are so different in the last 100 years or so that the body is not designed for the likes of biscuits, or chocolate, or sugar etc.  There are many more items we eat now but to list them would cause me use up many more pages.

There is so much more in this report that I couldn’t do it justice in these few words.  If you are someone who suffers, or you know someone don’t hesitate to get the relief you or they deserve.

To find out more about this report please click here.

Natural Rheumatoid Arthritis Treatment.         top of page

    By Ivan (Mick) Hince.

On looking for a natural cure for Rheumatoid Arthritis I was quite knocked back on reading Medical notes that there wasn’t any known cure, and how the disease became worse the longer the patient had it.

But being determined I carried on and during this time I began to read horror stories after horror stories.  I read how the joints in the body become inflamed, and how steadily they get more and more painful to the point that sometimes the patient cannot move out of his/her bed.

The list of the joints affected by this inflammatory disease is immense.  Toes, ankles, knees, hips, arms, fingers, wrists, shoulders, and everywhere there is a joint in the body.

As the disease takes hold the patient can expect deformities, and to give an example the patient may grossly deformed fingers or toes, which give constant pain.

Further reading on the Medical side of things the Doctors and specialists still are not sure what causes it.  Some think that it might come from the patient diet, while others will say that it comes from some form of bug that has been present in the patient’s food.  In one case it was believed to have started from a throat infection but at the end of the day I don’t think they know.

I did come up with some facts and figures during my research, which are frightening to say the least.  In normal circumstances once the patient has been diagnosed he/she will be in pain, and would likely be taking many painkillers.  Between three to five years the patient would not be able to work, and would be to a large degree confined to their homes.  After yen years the disease would be in control, and severe deformities, and severe pain would be constantly with them.

But after all this doom and gloom I did find a website that offered relief to the point the patient would able to be pain free, and have their mobility back.  This relief comes in the way of a diet change but just to call it diet change is not really fair.  The patient would have to spend quite some time reading as I did but in the end I think that it would well worthwhile.
